First protons fired, World still safe : Large Hadron Collider

Three decades after it was conceived, the world's most powerful physics experiment Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has sent the first beam around its 27km-long tunnel.
Scientists at the world's largest particle collider have fired the first protons into a 17-mile-long tunnel in science's next great step to understand the makeup of the universe.
Project leader Lyn Evans gave the go-ahead to send the protons into the accelerator below the Swiss-French border early Wednesday.
The $3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider was under construction since 2003. Scientists hope it will provide the necessary power to smash the components of atoms so that they can see how they are made.
The startup has been eagerly awaited by 9,000 physicists around the world who will conduct experiments here.
Some skeptics have said they fear the collisions of protons could eventually imperil Earth.
'It's nonsense,'' said James Gillies, chief spokesman for CERN, the host European Organization for Nuclear Research.
CERN is backed by leading scientists like Britain's Stephen Hawking in dismissing the fears and declaring the experiments to be absolutely safe.
Gillies told the AP that the most dangerous thing that could happen would be if a beam at full power were to go out of control, and that would only damage the accelerator itself and burrow into the rock around the tunnel deep below the Swiss-French border.
And full power is probably a year away.
''On Wednesday we start small,'' said Gillies. ''What we're putting in to start with is one single low intensity bunch at low energy and we thread that around. We get experience with low energy things and then we ramp up as we get to know the machine better.''
He said a good result for Wednesday would be to have one beam going all the way around the tunnel in a counterclockwise direction. If that works, the scientists will then try to send a beam in the other direction.
''A really good result would be to have the other beam going around, too, because once you've got a beam around once in both directions you know that there is no show stopper,'' Gillies said. ''It's going to work.''
However, if there is some blockage in the machine, experts will have to go in and fix the problem, and that could take time.
The LHC, as the collider is known, will take scientists to within a split second of a laboratory recreation of the big bang, which they theorize was the massive explosion that created the universe.
The project organized by the 20 European member nations of CERN has attracted researchers of 80 nationalities. Some 1,200 are from the United States, an observer country which contributed $531 million. Japan, another observer, also is a major contributor.
The collider is designed to push the proton beam close to the speed of light, whizzing 11,000 times a second around the tunnel.
Smaller colliders have been used for decades to study the makeup of the atom. Less than 100 years ago scientists thought protons and neutrons were the smallest components of an atom's nucleus, but in stages since then experiments have shown they were made of still smaller quarks and gluons and that there were other forces and particles.
The CERN experiments could reveal more about ''dark matter,'' antimatter and possibly hidden dimensions of space and time. It could also find evidence of the hypothetical particle _ the Higgs boson _ believed to give mass to all other particles, and thus to matter that makes up the universe.
Some scientists have been waiting for 20 years to use the LHC. But even their younger colleagues are excited that startup has finally arrived.
''I think it's a very important project,'' said Katie McAlpine, 23, a Michigan State University graduate who made a rap video about the project.
''It's mostly out of scientific curiosity, what is the universe made of? How does it work? What are the rules? That's very exciting and it's important to advance our knowledge,'' she told Associated Press Television News.
She said she was surprised by the success of the video, which has had more than a million views on YouTube and which has received approval from CERN for its scientific accuracy, especially in its success with young people.

IT employees under scan

Wipro Tech puts 3000 staff under scan
Wipro Technologies has put about 4-5% of its workforce, about 2,400-3,000 employees, under the scanner for non-performance. While some would be given counselling to improve their performance, others would be asked to leave.

Wipro’s corporate vice-president (human resources) Pratik Kumar confirmed the move. “It’s a regular annual exercise. As the appraisal cycle gets over, a multi-layer review happens. Following that, people who have fallen in the lower quadrants of performance are put on watch. Some are asked to pull up and others are asked to move on,” he said.

Asked how many employees had been asked to move on, he said the company did not disclose that number, but it was “significantly lower than 2,000”. Company sources said about 1,000 employees were being asked to leave. “I can’t comment on a particular number,” Mr Kumar said, when asked to comment. The review includes all the 60,000 global IT services employees from the senior leadership team down to the person with one-year experience.

In February, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country’s largest IT services firm, had given pink slips to 500 non-performers. IBM, too, had asked about 700 employees in India to leave, citing non-performance. In July, Patni Computer Systems had shown the door to 400 employees. While IT companies said the move was not linked to the slowdown in the US, a key market for IT services, there was a consensus that it was time for belt-tightening.

At the end of the quarter ended June 2008, Wipro’s IT services employee base had fallen to 61,345 from 62,070 employees at the end of the previous quarter.

“It’s not just our view, but the industry’s view, that we have to be thoughtful of additions and drive productivity. We took a closer look at our hiring and realised that we did not need to hire more, since there were people on the bench,” Mr Kumar said. Bench refers to the buffer of employees not assigned to a particular project.

As the company works towards improving utilisation rates while keeping a tight rein on employee additions, its bench strength would come down. At the end of the quarter ended June 2008, Wipro’s utilisation rate was 78% (excluding trainees) and 74% (including trainees). “We want to raise utilisation by 1-2% during the year and the bench strength would go down by a similar percentage,” Mr Kumar said.

Google's Secret Revealed

Google’s Secret Revealed / Optimise Google Search
Discussed below are various Google’s special commands and I shall be explaining each command in brief and will show how it can be used for getting confidential data.
[ intitle: ]
The “intitle:” syntax helps Google restrict the search results to pages containing that word in the title. For example, “intitle: login password” (without quotes) will return links to those pages that has the word "login" in their title, and the word "password" anywhere in the page.
Similarly, if one has to query for more than one word in the page title then in that case “allintitle:” can be used instead of “intitle” to get the list of pages containing all those words in its title. For example using “intitle: login intitle: password” is same as querying “allintitle: login password”.
[ inurl: ]
The “inurl:” syntax restricts the search results to those URLs containing the search keyword. For example: “inurl: passwd” (without quotes) will return only links to those pages that have "passwd" in the URL. Similarly, if one has to query for more than one word in an URL then in that case “allinurl:” can be used instead of “inurl” to get the list of URLs containing all those search keywords in it. For example: “allinurl: etc/passwd“ will look for the URLs containing
“etc” and “passwd”. The slash (“/”) between the words will be ignored by Google.

[ site: ]

The “site:” syntax restricts Google to query for certain keywords in a particular site or domain. For example: “exploits site:xyz.com” (without quotes) will look for the keyword “exploits” in those pages present in all the links of the domain “xyz.com”. There should not be any space between “site:” and the “domain name”.
[ filetype: ]
This “filetype:” syntax restricts Google search for files on internet with particular extensions (i.e. doc, pdf or ppt etc). For example: “filetype:doc site:gov confidential” (without quotes) will look for files with “.doc” extension in all government domains with “.gov” extension and containing the word “confidential” either in the pages or in the “.doc” file. i.e. the result will contain the links to all confidential word document files on the government sites.
[ link: ]
“link:” syntax will list down webpages that have links to the specified webpage.

Note there can be no space between the "link:" and theweb page url.
[ related: ]
The “related:” will list web pages that are "similar" to a specified web page. For Example: “related:www.google.com” will list web pages that are similar to the google homepage like Search Engines. Note there can be no space between the "related:" and the web
page url.

[ cache: ]
The query “cache:” will show the version of the web page that Google has in its cache. For Example: “cache:www.google.com” will show Google's cache of the Google homepage. Note there can be no space between the "cache:" and the web page url.
If you include other words in the query, Google will highlight those words within the cached document. For Example: “cache:www.google.com guest” will show the cached content with the word "guest" highlighted.
[ intext: ]
The “intext:” syntax searches for words in a particular website. It ignores links or URLs and page titles. For example: “intext:exploits” (without quotes) will return only links to those web pages that has the search keyword "exploits" in its webpage.
[ phonebook: ]
“phonebook” searches for U.S. street address and phone number information. For Example: “phonebook:Lisa+CA” will list down all names of person having “Lisa” in their names and located in “California (CA)”. This can be used as a great tool for hackers incase someone want to do dig personal information for social engineering.
Google's Secret Revealed by demystifying Google Hacks
Well, the Google’s query syntaxes discussed above can really help people to precise their search and get what they are exactly looking for. Now Google being so intelligent search engine, hackers don’t mind exploiting its ability to dig much confidential and secret information from the net which they are not supposed to know.

Now I shall discuss those techniques in details how hackers dig information from the net using Google and how that information can be used to break into remote servers.
Using “Index of ” syntax to find sites enabled with Index browsing
A webserver with Index browsing enabled means anyone can browse the webserver directories like ordinary local directories.
Here I shall discuss how one can use “index of” syntax to get a list links to webserver which has got directory browsing enabled. This becomes an easy source for information gathering for a hacker. Imagine if the get hold of password files or others sensitive files which are not normally visible to the internet. Below given are few examples using which one can get
access to many sensitive information much easily.
Index of /admin
Index of /passwd
Index of /password
Index of /mail
"Index of /" +passwd
"Index of /" +password.txt
"Index of /" +.htaccess
"Index of /secret"
"Index of /confidential"
"Index of /root"
"Index of /cgi-bin"
"Index of /credit-card"
"Index of /logs"
"Index of /config"
Looking for vulnerable sites or servers using “inurl:” or “allinurl:”
a. Using “allinurl:winnt/system32/(without quotes) will list down all the links to the server which gives access to restricted directories like “system32” through web. If you are lucky enough then you might get access to the cmd.exe in the “system32” directory. Once you have the access to “cmd.exe” and is able to execute it then Bingo!! You owns the server. ?
b. Using “allinurl:wwwboard/passwd.txt”(without quotes) in the Google search will list down all the links to the server which are vulnerable to “WWWBoard Password vulnerability”. c. Using “inurl:.bash_history” (without quotes) will list down all the links to the server which gives access to “.bash_history” file through web. This is a command history file. This file includes the list of command executed by the administrator, and sometimes includes sensitive information such as password typed in by the administrator. If this file
is compromised and if contains the encrypted unix (or *nix) password then it can be easily cracked using “John The Ripper”.
d. Using “inurl:config.txt” (without quotes) will list down all the links to the servers which gives access to “config.txt” file through web. This file contains sensitive information, including the hash value of the administrative password and database authentication credentials. For Example: Ingenium Learning Management System is a Web-based application for Windows based systems developed by Click2learn, Inc. Ingenium Learning Management System versions 5.1 and 6.1 stores sensitive information insecurely in the config.txt file. Other similar search using “inurl:” or “allinurl:” combined with other syntaxs
inurl:admin filetype:txt
inurl:admin filetype:db
inurl:admin filetype:cfg
inurl:mysql filetype:cfg
inurl:passwd filetype:txt
inurl:iisadmin
inurl:auth_user_file.txt
inurl:orders.txt
inurl:"wwwroot/*."
inurl:adpassword.txt
inurl:webeditor.php
inurl:file_upload.php
inurl:gov filetype:xls "restricted"
index of ftp +.mdb allinurl:/cgi-bin/ +mailto
Looking for vulnerable sites or servers using “
intitle:” or “allintitle:
a. Using [allintitle: "index of /root”] (without brackets) will list down the links to the web server which gives access to restricted directories like “root” through web. This directory sometimes contains sensitive information which can be easily retrieved through simple web requests.
b. Using [
allintitle: "index of /admin”] (without brackets) will list down the links to the websites which has got index browsing enabled for restricted directories like “admin” through web. Most of the web application sometimes uses names like “admin” to store admin credentials in it. This directory sometimes contains sensitive information which can be easily retrieved through simple web requests.
Other similar search using “
intitle:” or “allintitle:” combined with other syntaxs
intitle:"Index of" .sh_history
intitle:"Index of" .bash_history
intitle:"index of" passwd
intitle:"index of" people.lst
intitle:"index of" pwd.db
intitle:"index of" etc/shadow
intitle:"index of" spwd
intitle:"index of" master.passwd
intitle:"index of" htpasswd
intitle:"index of" members OR accounts
intitle:"index of" user_carts OR user_cart
allintitle: sensitive filetype:doc
allintitle: restricted filetype :mail
allintitle: restricted filetype:doc site:gov
Other interesting Search Queries
To search for sites vulnerable to
Cross-Sites Scripting (XSS) attacks:
allinurl:/scripts/cart32.exe
allinurl:/CuteNews/show_archives.php
allinurl:/phpinfo.php

To search for sites vulnerable to SQL Injection attacks:
allinurl:/privmsg.php
allinurl:/privmsg.php

Conclusion
This is a weird world of internet nothing is secure as anything you make more sophisticated will leads to further weakness or complexities
I work in the dark, I do what I can, I give what I have. My doubt is my passion, and my passion is my task. The rest is the madness of art.

One day I decided to quit...

One day I decided to quit...
I quit my job, my relationship, my spirituality. .. I wanted to quit my life.
I went to the woods to have one last talk with God.
"God", I said. "Can you give me one good reason not to quit?"
His answer surprised me... "Look around", He said.

"Do you see the fern and the bamboo?"
    "Yes", I replied.
When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them. I gave them light. I gave them water. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its brilliant green covered the floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. In the second year the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. He said.

"In the third year, there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit.
In the fourth year, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. "I would not quit." He said.
"Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant. .. But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive. I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle." He said to me. "Did you know, my child, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots." "I would not quit on the bamboo.
I will never quit on you. " Don't compare yourself to others .." He said.

" The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern ... Yet, they both make the forest beautiful."
Your time will come, " God said to me. "
You will rise high! " How high should I rise?" I asked. How high will the bamboo rise?" He asked in return. "As high as it can? " I questioned. " Yes. " He said, "Give me glory by rising as high as you can. " I left the forest and bring back this story.
I hope these words can help you see that God will never give up on you. He will never give up on you. Never regret a day in your life.
Good days give you happiness Bad days give you experiences; Both are essential to life.

A happy and meaningful life requires our continuous input and creativity. It does not happen by chance. It happens because of our choices and actions. And each day we are given new opportunities to choose and act and, in doing so, we create our own unique journey." Keep going...

Happiness keeps you Sweet, Trials keep you Strong,
Sorrows keep you Human, Failures keep you humble,
Success keeps You Glowing, but Only God keeps You Going!

One paragraph that will explain life

Arthur Ashe, the legendary Wimbledon player was dying of AIDS which he got due to infected blood he received during a heart surgery in 1983. From world over, he received letters from his fans, one of which conveyed: "Why does GOD have to select you for such a bad disease"?
To this Arthur Ashe replied: The world over -- 5 crore children startplaying tennis, 50 lakh learn to play tennis, 5 lakh learn professionaltennis, 50,000 come to the circuit, 5000 reach the grand slam, 50 reach Wimbledon, 4 to semi final, 2 to the finals, When I was holding a cup I never asked GOD "Why me?". And today in pain I should not be asking GOD"Why me?"
Happiness keeps u Sweet, Trials keep u Strong, Sorrow keeps u Human, Failure Keeps u Humble, Success keeps u Glowing, But only God Keeps u Going.....Keep Going.....

More Ford workers to lose their jobs

White-collar ones going now; others to leave by Aug. 1

Ford Motor Co. has begun dismissing salaried workers as part of an effort to shed 15% of its salaried-related costs by Aug. 1 in the face of a toughening U.S. economy.

The struggling market has resulted in an 11.2% sales decline for the automaker, with a disproportionate amount of the decline, 14%, hitting the profitable truck lineup.
As the Free Press previously reported, the company started the dismissals earlier this month, when it let go of more than 200 contract employees. Another round of contract-employee cuts is expected Thursday.
Ford spokesman Mark Truby confirmed Monday that the dismissals have spread to Ford's regular white-collar workforce. However, the bulk of the dismissals are expected in the weeks ahead, as the Aug. 1 deadline approaches.
In an effort to reach its objectives, the automaker is also forgoing filling many open positions and cutting benefits, such as tuition and scholarship programs for employees.
Ford posted a $100-million profit in the first quarter of this year, but that small gain followed a $2.7-billion loss in 2007 and a record $12.6-billion loss in 2006.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally has said that, given the tough U.S. economy, which has consumers shifting faster than ever from trucks to fuel-efficient, affordable cars, Ford will not likely hit its profit target for 2009. That means Ford will post four straight annual losses as it attempts to restructure its business and provide more of the fuel-efficient cars and crossovers that customers want.
To adjust the market shift, Ford said Friday that it would cut truck production by 90,000 over the next few months -- its second decline in truck production in two months -- and delay the launch of its new F-150 pickup until late fall as it struggles to sell off the current model in an environment where pickup sales are falling.
The truck plants will see shift reductions; Ford is adding shifts at three car plants. Through May, Ford cars sales were down 5%, but some models posted big gains.
Sales of the Ford Focus compact car, which is built in Wayne, are up 36% this year.
Ford's sales so far this year have been representative of the industry as a whole. Total U.S. sales of cars and light trucks are down 8.4%. Sales of light trucks, which include pickups, SUVs and minivans, are down 15.7%.
